Arts in Education

(Click the above link and scroll down to AIE Mini-Grants for financial help hosting King Classical NWA in your school or 501c3!)

As adjunct voice teacher at Har-Ber High School, Mrs. King loves preparing students for All-Region, All-State, ACDA, and college auditions, and she teaches a unit on art song to the choirs.

Now an artist on the Art in Education roster,  Mrs. King is excited to share with more districts the brilliance of classical composers and the beautiful possibilities for the human voice. In her lesson plan, Mrs. King empowers students to choose a song from the classical genre and to improve their technical and artistic skill. Students have the opportunity to interact with a real opera singer and hear singing which is beyond their musical horizon and which expands their understanding of dynamics, vocal freedom, and range.

Part of the week-long unit includes listening to a duet by Mrs. King and Juilliard-trained baritone Theodore Carlson, who sang leading roles in European opera houses for over 20 years.

The Arts in Education Mini-Grants are short-term residencies of up to 10 days where professional artists from the Arts in Education Roster provide curriculum-based arts activities in a school environment or other location, or provide a teacher's professional development workshop. Artists must be selected from the Arts in Education Roster.

Pre K-12 schools for programs during school hours, and/or organizations that provide after school or summer programs, have an opportunity to apply for Arkansas Arts Council funding to:

  • Bring quality, professional artists into the classroom or other location to present one- to ten-day hands on, curriculum based arts activities.

  • Present a teachers' professional development workshop in curriculum based arts activities either in conjunction with, or instead of a residency.

Contact the Arts in Education Program manager, Matt Boyce, at 501.324.9769 for more information on AIE mini-grants.
